What it is

xAI publishes Grok Build as an extensible coding agent for professional software work. Install is documented as curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash (PowerShell installer also documented). Early beta launched 25 May 2026 for SuperGrok and X Premium Plus. Later news (19 Aug 2026) says it is available on every plan on web and mobile. The harness was announced open source 15 to 16 Jul 2026.

Relation to models

Build docs currently describe the CLI/product as powered by grok-4.6, and that model is on the xAI API. A separate API coding slug, grok-build-0.1, is listed as early access / public beta. Keep the product and the slug distinct. Default model id inside every Build surface (TUI vs web vs mobile) over time: confirm on live docs; marketing has shifted 4.5 → 4.6.

Published capabilities

Docs and marketing name plan mode, subagents/worktrees, skills/plugins/MCP/AGENTS.md, hooks, headless /goal, workflows, marketplace, and enterprise config scopes (~/.grok/config.toml, managed configs). Do not treat that list as an unpublished internal architecture.

Open questions

xAI has not said whether “Composer 2.5” (news 1 Jun 2026) is a model name or a Grok Build interface name; it has no row on the models page. Reports of a July 2026 codebase upload incident come from other outlets, not an xAI news post.
