Capabilities

Work OpenAI documents for dots.

  • Turns customer feedback into tested fixes and pull requests, with videos of the changes. [1]
  • Revises launch materials when scope changes; reruns analyses and updates figures for a paper. [1]
  • Updates a sales proposal and builds a proof of concept; turns interview transcripts into clips, show notes, and social posts. [1]
  • Starts and manages Codex cloud tasks; works on several projects at once using background agents. [4] Reads and edits ChatGPT Work automations. [5]

Strengths

Where OpenAI's design differs from the other tools here.

  • Optional use of your computer through the ChatGPT desktop app, off by default. [2] You can hop on a voice call with the dot. [1]
  • Starts and manages Codex cloud tasks; maker examples include customer feedback turned into pull requests with videos of the changes. [1] October docs also describe reading and editing ChatGPT Work automations. [5]
  • Reachable in Slack and Teams. [1]
  • REPORTED · Every said Dot's email drafts beat Duet's. [8]

Connectors

Plugins and messaging surfaces.

  • Plugins are shared with ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. [3]
  • Slack and personal email. It can't have its own standalone email address at launch. [2] Also on Microsoft Teams. [1] It can have its own separate Slack account. [3]
  • Specialist dots via Microsoft Agent 365 are in progress. [1]

Approval and safety

Custom Rules and auto-review.

  • Custom Rules with four settings: take action without asking, take action if pre-approved, ask first, or hand off to you. [2]
  • Auto-review checks actions such as email recipients and content. [3]
  • Password changes and money transfers require you to take over. Merchant-saved-card purchases need approval. [3] Asking for a draft doesn't authorise sending it. [2]
  • REPORTED · No Stripe virtual-card checkout at review time. [7]

Proactive behaviour

Background research and schedules.

  • Proactive research: read-only background review of connected apps; research tools can't send, change content, or control a browser. [1]
  • Decides when to pause and wake. [4]
  • Fixed schedules are optional, for example each weekday at 9 AM Central. [6]

Memory

ChatGPT memory plus dot-specific notes.

  • Receives ChatGPT memory and creates its own memories, including from connected apps. [2]
  • You can't view or edit individual dot memories; resetting deletes them. [3]
  • Its context doesn't keep credentials, images, or screenshots. Disconnecting an app doesn't delete what the dot learned from it. [3]

Limits

Regional and safety limits OpenAI lists.

  • Not for under-18s; not in the EEA, Switzerland, or UK. [2]
  • Some steps, such as password changes, are always yours. Custom Rules cannot override core safety requirements. [3]
  • Websites may block its cloud browser. [2]

Privacy

Training and encryption.

  • Personal plans: the Improve the model setting controls training. Business, Enterprise, and Edu: no training by default. [3]
  • No direct training on proactive research or the dot's own notes. Humans may review activity for safety even when training is off. [3]
  • Content is encrypted at rest and in transit. [3]

Coming soon

OpenAI's stated next steps.

  • More dots per user; scaling speed or monthly work. [1]
  • Wider texting and expansion to more users soon. [1]
  • Specialist dots (enterprise pilots) and Agent 365. [1]
